This is an Eastern Hercules Beetle! Dynastes hercules ecuatorianus This is my favorite picture of one. Hercules Beetles are my favorite animal! They're super strong, they weigh only ~3oz at max but they can lift 850 times their own weight! That's 159 lbs!!! They're so cool!!! They're huge! My dream is to find one in the wild. I'd really love to hold one. They start out as these grubs Then they go into the ground and pupate and turn into beetles!
Another favorite of mine is Shining Leaf Chafers! This one is actually a whole subfamily, Rutelinae! My favorite out of these has to be Chrysina limbata which is found in mid-altitude forests in Costa Rica and western Panama! These are my favorite pictures of them! This one looks like a puppy to me, just a good little man. A good full-body look. They're shiny to mimic the look of light reflecting off of water droplets on leaves! These beetles are so rare that we have no idea what its immature stages look like! Isn't that neat?? I'd give anything to cultivate them and find out!!
Exciting update, I just found a wild Polyphemus moth!!! Scientific name, Antheraea polyphemus, this moth is a member of the family Saturniidae, also known as giant silk moths! Here's a picture of the one I found! I very gently scooped her up because she fell onto the ground and seemed to have trouble flying, and she was Insanely soft! This was my first time ever holding a moth and I had no clue they were that soft!! It's also the biggest moth I've ever seen in person, I gasped out loud then I saw her! I suspect she's female, because her antennae are very slim. Males typically have very bushy antennae!
